What is doctrine? Simply put, doctrine is what we believe. Doctrine consists of the basic teachings about God, His Son, Jesus Christ, The Holy Spirit, Man, how to be saved, end times… everything you need to know to live a life pleasing to God.
Why is doctrine important? Because it is important to have a good grasp on what you actually believe. Otherwise, you will be “tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming.”
Ephesians 4:14
How do we learn doctrine? For the most part, doctrine is learned by listening to faithful people of God teach, preach, and model. There is a downside to that method of learning doctrine, though. That downside is that, unless you are a faithful student of the Bible (read: you do your own study), you’ll only learn the doctrinal positions of those who teach you.
We are not that different in that we teach over 100 hours of doctrine in our training program. However, we do insist that our students study the Bible for themselves. Paul was right on target when he told Timothy,
2 Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage with great patience and careful instruction. 3 For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 2 Timothy 4:2-3
